When placing pit bulls, you should always check to make sure they are allowed in the city/state of the potential adopter. Many cities all over the U.S. (and other countries) have banned pit bulls, or have restrictions on owning pit bulls. You can find a list of cities/states/countries and their pit bull laws here:
Understand-a-Bull – BSL locations
Remember, no single website can possibly keep an always updated, all-inclusive list of every case of BSL. Check multiple resources to verify.
Other resources for checking local laws:
- Municode – Municipal Codes (search by keyword, e.g., “pit bull” or “pitbull”)
- Rott-N-Chatter – BSLÂ
- Google (or any other search engine)
Search for the official website of the city/state online, many municipalities have their laws and ordinances listed directly on their sites.
Just received this info, I was informed that this will be presented at tomorrow’s City Council meeting. The last agenda listed on the city website is from August, so I have no way to confirm.
The petition was sparked due to a recent incident where a pit bull escaped its owner’s yard and attacked a poodle.
Pit bull broke out of the gate of its owner’s privacy fenced-in yard, and went after the neighbor’s Poodle, who was on a leash at the time. Poodle’s leg was severely damaged. Poodle’s owner opted to euthanize his dog, rather than pay to have the damaged leg amputated. Pit Bull owner did not have his dog licensed or proof of current rabies. Owner was fined and pit bull was quarantined at local shelter. Poodle owner claimed the pit bull bit him, but pit bull owner claims he saw the poodle bite its owner. Court hearing DID NOT find the pit bull to be a “vicious dog”. Pit Bull owner decided independently to have his dog euthanized.
The poodle’s owner has circulated a petition to BAN pit bulls from Flat Rock, and will be presenting the petition at tomorrow’s city council meeting. Poodle owner will also be presenting Allen Park’s recent pit bull ban ordinance, as a sample law.
I looked at Flat Rock’s ordinances, and could not find anything pertaining to vicious or dangerous dogs.

Ordinance that originally proposed restrictions for owning pit bulls is back on the agenda for next Tuesday, July 28th. I will not have a current version of the proposed ordinance until Monday. I’m also a bit concerned about the note that states they are amending the section regarding “Immediate Removal of Animals”. I don’t recall seeing that on previous agendas, and since it is lumped together under the same agenda item number as the pit bull ordinance, I think there is legitimate cause for extra concern.
